Wow and Flutterville Global Playgarden offers nature-inspired, play-based child care for little ones ages 6 weeks to 5 years old in a loving environment centered around kindness, inclusion, and cross-cultural learning.
The staff of Global Playgarden will be made up of at least 50% refugees from an applicant pool made up of women with degrees in chemistry, math, and early childhood education and from countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Costa Rica, and Somalia.
Along with our daily rhythm of activities in our home as well as in our local Sellwood community and nearby Johnson Creek, Global Playgarden will celebrate refugee teachers’ cultures by including their songs, stories, art, and foods as part of our own community culture. Weekly visits from our Music and French teachers will be another playgarden highlight.
Serving organic, fresh, and local foods and using only green cleaning supplies, low voc paints, natural/organic materials, as well as beautiful and gentle colors, we are creating a peaceful space where young children can feel safe to explore, play, create, and “just be” in peace and joy.

Miss Deanna: Owner
Originally from Seattle, Deanna returned to the Pacific Northwest after a 20-year career in L.A.’s music industry. Once settled in Portland, she began pursuing the work she knew was her life’s calling: caring for, loving, playing and dreaming with babies and young children. Having an educational background in Early Childhood Education, Deanna’s studies and training expanded to include Waldorf Early Childhood Education and Lifeways Early Childhood philosophies. She dreamed of creating spaces for little ones that offered them opportunities to learn and grow through nature-based free play. Remembering the absence of this type of child care option while raising her own children, Deanna recognized a need that wasn’t being filled and went to work filling this need in her own community. Deanna founded Wow and Flutterville with the mission of creating a “home-away-from-home” for infants and toddlers that honors attachment parenting, family nursing choices, Mother Nature, inclusion, community, and a child's most important work: to play. Music, the arts, yoga, movement, song, and time spent in nature fill each day at Wow and Flutterville Playgardens. Committed to creating a playgarden culture based on kindness, empathy, community and inclusion in beautiful, warm, inspiring home settings, Deanna opened her first playgarden eight years ago. Since then, her program has expanded to three locations, with a fourth location soon to open in Spring of 2017. In addition to being the owner of Wow and Flutterville, Deanna enjoys spending time with her three children, ages 8, 13 and 17. Her other loves include Kundalini yoga, nature, the arts and music. Deanna looks forward to caring for and inspiring your babies and precious children at times when they can't be under your loving care.
Miss Elise: French Teacher
Eager to share my enthusiasm for French, I headed to Portland, Oregon to teach at L'Etoile, a cute little French Immersion School. For 4 years I taught all ages, in English and French, from Preschool to 5th grade and opened a French class for parents with my mantra: make it fun and they will learn! And they have. So have I. I've relearned my earliest instinct about language and the community it creates. I've been able to recreate that family table in some way, to gather a diverse group of curious people and share our stories. It's never without struggle but rarely without laughter. Today, I'm so happy to offer French tutoring, classes, and workshops at my house in SW Portland and build this community of French learners, speakers, and enthusiasts. www.frenchwithelise.com
Mister Justin: Music Teacher
Mister Justin has been performing and teaching music in Portland since moving here in 2010. He grew up in Colorado and moved to France as a child, and both regions influenced his love of folk and string music from around the world. He taught kindergarten in a French Immersion school in Portland for two years before returning to pursue music full time in 2016. justineubanks.com
