Wow & Flutterville: Sellwood Childcare Center
8722 SE 17th Ave, Portland OR 97202
Your child will thrive in a community of kindness, empathy, and inclusion.
Infants and toddlers are beautiful observers who experience the world so lovingly with their newly discovered senses. As caregivers, we honor the way your precious one experiences its world, and we value their unique internal clock and rhythm.
Our “homes-away-from-home” philosophy embraces the Waldorf-inspired, Lifeways Early Education. We provide a loving community designed to support your little one in their work of exploring, discovering, and learning through nature-based free play in our Global Playground.
What is a Global Playgarden?
The staff of our Global Playgarden is made up of at least 50% refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Costa Rica, and Somalia. These well-educated women with degrees in chemistry, math, and early childhood education share their culture through songs, stories, art & food.
Facilities, food, activities, and exploration
Your child's daycare environment is a peaceful space where they feel safe to explore, play, create, and “just be” in peace and joy. We serve organic, fresh, and local foods and use only green cleaning supplies, low-VOC paints, and natural/organic materials, as well as beautiful and gentle colors.
Along with our daily rhythm of activities, we explore the local Sellwood community and the nearby beauty of Johnson Creek. Our children also dance and learn from our weekly visits from Music and French teachers.

Miss Heidi: Director
I am an Oregon native, and have been working in Portland's progressive child care community since 1986. My love for this work comes from a belief that caring about and for people is the path to true social change, and creating a peaceful world. I would characterize myself as a social justice warrior and have been honored to work in some amazing programs (Childpeace, Multnomah County Child Development Center (Piaget inspired), New Day School, Montessori of Alameda, Volunteers of America's domestic violence programs) and with some inspiring teachers, as well as being part of Portland's vibrant DIY art and punk music scene since the early 80's. My professional strengths are problem solving, assessment and observation, nonviolent communication, and a freakish love for doing paperwork. I have also spent a lot of my work life navigating the changing waters of the Child Care Division regulations, and mentoring providers on program quality (with the federal program Child Care Improvement Program, and in my day to day center work). My degree is in Women's Studies and English, and I have a director's certificate from the Oregon Association of Educators of Young Children; more meaningful, to me, however, is my many years of hands on work with families and in the classroom. I believe that all people need to be seen, valued and treated with respect. I have two outstanding children 12 & 18, one very patient husband, and a kooky dog. Our family is active in Mt Tabor soccer, community events and music. In my free time I cook, write personal narrative essays, absurd haiku, and do all kinds of handwork, while listening to my son's metal band rehearse in my basement. I wear shoes infrequently, and can usually be found sitting on the floor.
Miss Deanna: Owner
Originally from Seattle, Deanna returned to the Pacific Northwest after a 20-year career in L.A.’s music industry. Once settled in Portland, she began pursuing the work she knew was her life’s calling: caring for, loving, playing and dreaming with babies and young children. Having an educational background in Early Childhood Education, Deanna’s studies and training expanded to include Waldorf Early Childhood Education and Lifeways Early Childhood philosophies. She dreamed of creating spaces for little ones that offered them opportunities to learn and grow through nature-based free play. Remembering the absence of this type of child care option while raising her own children, Deanna recognized a need that wasn’t being filled and went to work filling this need in her own community. Deanna founded Wow and Flutterville with the mission of creating a “home-away-from-home” for infants and toddlers that honors attachment parenting, family nursing choices, Mother Nature, inclusion, community, and a child's most important work: to play. Music, the arts, yoga, movement, song, and time spent in nature fill each day at Wow and Flutterville Playgardens. Committed to creating a playgarden culture based on kindness, empathy, community and inclusion in beautiful, warm, inspiring home settings, Deanna opened her first playgarden eight years ago. Since then, her program has expanded to three locations, with a fourth location soon to open in Spring of 2017. In addition to being the owner of Wow and Flutterville, Deanna enjoys spending time with her three children, ages 8, 13 and 17. Her other loves include Kundalini yoga, nature, the arts and music. Deanna looks forward to caring for and inspiring your babies and precious children at times when they can't be under your loving care.
Miss Elise: French Teacher
Eager to share my enthusiasm for French, I headed to Portland, Oregon to teach at L'Etoile, a cute little French Immersion School. For 4 years I taught all ages, in English and French, from Preschool to 5th grade and opened a French class for parents with my mantra: make it fun and they will learn! And they have. So have I. I've relearned my earliest instinct about language and the community it creates. I've been able to recreate that family table in some way, to gather a diverse group of curious people and share our stories. It's never without struggle but rarely without laughter. Today, I'm so happy to offer French tutoring, classes, and workshops at my house in SW Portland and build this community of French learners, speakers, and enthusiasts. www.frenchwithelise.com
Mister Justin: Music Teacher
Mister Justin has been performing and teaching music in Portland since moving here in 2010. He grew up in Colorado and moved to France as a child, and both regions influenced his love of folk and string music from around the world. He taught kindergarten in a French Immersion school in Portland for two years before returning to pursue music full time in 2016. justineubanks.com
