Miss Jessica studied Human Development and Family studies at Warner Pacific College. She has been a teacher, parent trainer and a director. Being a part of a child's life is such an amazing experience for Miss Jessica. Allowing them to grow and learn in each of their individual ways is a joy to assist in. Outside of working with children, Miss Jessica enjoys singing, camping and biking.
Miss Daniska: Butterfly Classroom Teacher
Miss Daniska is a Portland, OR native who is half African American and Chilean. She is fully bilingual in Spanish and is a mother of 9 year old Jeramiah and 5 year old Jazzalynn. She is an Army wife and has been a dedicated Early Childhood Teacher for 9 years. Her experience ranges from Assistant, Lead Teacher to Director. In her spare time she enjoys the summer sun at local rivers, camping, and trips to voodoo donuts with her family!
Miss Lexie: Assistant Teacher
Miss Lexie was raised in Beaverton, OR and has worked with children in a variety of settings. While working towards her B.S. in educational foundations at the University of Oregon she worked part time as a student teacher at the campus child development center working with children ranging from the age of six months to five years old. She went on to complete a Masters at U of O in Elementary Education but decided that she wanted to continue to work with children under the age of 5 because she missed the curiosity they had for the world around them. It is such a joy to assist these young children in their individual development and growth. In her free time Miss Lexie enjoys baking, gardening and reading a good book.
Miss Teri: Assistant Teacher & Floater
Miss Teri has many years of experience working with children in different settings. She has been babysitting since the age of eleven and has worked as a nanny, outdoor environmental educator and in childcare facilities. She grew up in New Jersey and has been living in Portland for over four years. Outside of Wow and Flutterville, Teri spends lots of time playing with her ten pound doggy, Gracie Lu. She is going back to school at PCC to study sound and hopes to be recording and making electronic music in the near future! She loves dancing, doing yoga, riding her bicycle around town and going out to hear live music. She is excited to get the opportunity to spend time with and get to know all of the children at the three locations of Wow and Flutterville, as she travels around covering lunch breaks for the staff.
Miss Shelly: Assistant Teacher & Floater
Miss Shelly is an Oregon native, growing up in Eugene, Oregon. She followed in her father’s footsteps as a U of O graduate. She comes from two generations of teachers, her grandfather and father. Believing that “It takes a village to raise a child”, she embraces all the wonderful, caring opportunities here helping the WOW little ones experience nature, to grow and to learn. She started babysitting her two siblings and neighborhood children when she was a teen, has worked at a local Portland preschool, and also one in the Bay area of California. She was the leader of her daughter’s Brownie Girl Scout troop, and always enjoyed her daughter’s school field trips and going on regular outdoor explorations throughout the Portland metro area. Gathering the summer harvests with her and visiting the Rhododendron garden (always a treat in spring) were favorite activities. Hiking, camping, bicycling, cooking and dancing to live jazz and blues bands and foster-caring for a lop-eared fluffy bunny she calls “Duffy” are her current loves.
Miss Deanna: Owner
Originally from Seattle, Deanna returned to the Pacific Northwest after a 20-year career in L.A.’s music industry. Once settled in Portland, she began pursuing the work she knew was her life’s calling: caring for, loving, playing and dreaming with babies and young children. Having an educational background in Early Childhood Education, Deanna’s studies and training expanded to include Waldorf Early Childhood Education and Lifeways Early Childhood philosophies. She dreamed of creating spaces for little ones that offered them opportunities to learn and grow through nature-based free play. Remembering the absence of this type of child care option while raising her own children, Deanna recognized a need that wasn’t being filled and went to work filling this need in her own community. Deanna founded Wow and Flutterville with the mission of creating a “home-away-from-home” for infants and toddlers that honors attachment parenting, family nursing choices, Mother Nature, inclusion, community, and a child's most important work: to play. Music, the arts, yoga, movement, song, and time spent in nature fill each day at Wow and Flutterville Playgardens. Committed to creating a playgarden culture based on kindness, empathy, community and inclusion in beautiful, warm, inspiring home settings, Deanna opened her first playgarden eight years ago. Since then, her program has expanded to three locations, with a fourth location soon to open in Spring of 2017. In addition to being the owner of Wow and Flutterville, Deanna enjoys spending time with her three children, ages 8, 13 and 17. Her other loves include Kundalini yoga, nature, the arts and music. Deanna looks forward to caring for and inspiring your babies and precious children at times when they can't be under your loving care.
Miss Elise: French Teacher
Eager to share my enthusiasm for French, I headed to Portland, Oregon to teach at L'Etoile, a cute little French Immersion School. For 4 years I taught all ages, in English and French, from Preschool to 5th grade and opened a French class for parents with my mantra: make it fun and they will learn! And they have. So have I. I've relearned my earliest instinct about language and the community it creates. I've been able to recreate that family table in some way, to gather a diverse group of curious people and share our stories. It's never without struggle but rarely without laughter. Today, I'm so happy to offer French tutoring, classes, and workshops at my house in SW Portland and build this community of French learners, speakers, and enthusiasts. www.frenchwithelise.com
